Learn how to use your sewing machine to design and produce beautiful jewellery with textile artist Gilda Baron. Mollie Makes editor Lara Watson is our current guest tutor and will be personally selecting the best designs to appear in a special Mollie Makes feature later in the year.

This is an inspiring course for textile lovers who want to branch out into making jewelry, as well as for jewelers keen to work with a new material. There’s no need for precious metals and soldering irons: instead, you will learn how to design and create necklaces, earrings, bracelets and more using a standard domestic sewing machine. You will work exclusively with thread, a low-cost material, and learn efficient ways to produce original designs to sell.

Get bespoke teaching from industry experts

Throughout the course you’ll be given personal feedback and advice from Gilda Baron and a roster of leading industry experts. In January, our guest tutor is Lara Watson, editor of Mollie Makes and expert sewer. As well as answering technical questions, she will offer insight into making your designs irresistible to buyers and journalists.

Exclusive career opportunities

As well as learning a technique which will enable you to move from creating traditional textiles into jewelry, you have the opportunity to secure prestigious press coverage for your creations. Lara will be personally selecting her favourite designers to appear in a special Mollie Makes feature, and while reviewing your work will be on the look out for aspiring new designer-makers to cover in the future.

Your own career coach

All enrolled students will have email access to their own dedicated career coach at Mastered for one month, on hand to help advise, signpost, nudge and whatever is needed to help you develop your creative career. This launch offer is available as part of the Founding 500 initiative.

Course breakdown

There is a mixture of video lessons, demonstrations and exercises, picture galleries to inspire and projects for you to complete. Here’s what the course looks like:

  1. Part 1: Getting started.

Discover the materials and key techniques needed for creating jewelry with free-motion machine embroidery and learn how to overcome any problems that might arise. In this module you’ll also learn how to start a sketchbook and think about design.

  2. Part 2: Designing the elements.

Now you’ve mastered the machine embroidered techniques needed, it’s time to test out your skills and start creating shapes. Gilda teaches you how to create texture and depth, allowing you to explore the possibilities of jewelry making using your sewing machine. Learn how to produce your own designs and make the most of your threads.

  3. Part 3: Creating the jewelry.

This module concentrates on the construction of machine embroidered jewelry. Learn how to make a necklace, and apply the skills you’ve learnt to create bracelets, earrings, hair accessories and much more.

  4. Part 4: Designing your own.

This section helps you design and create your own machine embroidered jewelry, with extra tricks and tips to enhance your embroidery skills and new techniques to add new materials. There is also a brilliant opportunity to have your work featured in Mollie Makes: guest tutor Lara will feature her favourite pieces in a special article.
