Have you always wanted to create beautiful, intricate silver jewelry, but don’t have expensive tools, a studio or a degree in silversmithing? The answer is metal clay. It’s the perfect material for designer-makers keen to work in silver, but from home instead of a workshop. And, as you don’t need to invest in lots of pricey tools to work with the material, this course is suitable for anyone who wants to create their own designs in silver.

In this course you will learn how to design and create two pieces of silver jewelry, discovering key design, moulding, texturing, carving, firing and polishing techniques. You will be taught how to finish your pieces to a professional standard that is good enough to sell.

Course breakdown

There is a mixture of video lessons, demonstrations and exercises, picture galleries to inspire and projects for you to complete. You will come out of the course having made two pieces of metal clay jewelry. Here’s what the course looks like:

  1. Part 1: Getting started

Discover the unique properties of metal clay and how to work with it in your home or studio. Learn about the tools you’ll need (and those you really don’t need to invest in), who are the best suppliers, how to set up your workstation and how to take the first steps in producing a design. In the first instance you will be designing a pendant.

  2. Part 2: Design and moulding

Master key techniques for rolling, cutting, moulding, shaping, carving and other creative ways to manipulate metal clay into a design you love. After learning these skills - which can be applied to all types of jewelry - you will turn your pendant design into reality. Plus, discover how to set stones in metal clay.

  3. Part 3: Finishing techniques

In this module you will learn how fire your metal clay jewelry at home, turning it from clay into silver jewelry made of 99.99% precious metal. Discover the most effective, and safest, ways to work with a butane torch and how to fire it in a way that ensures you achieve a professional finish. Learn how to sand and polish the silver to achieve a beautiful shine.

  4. Part 4: Taking it further

Discover more advance finishing techniques that give silver jewelry an antiqued or coloured finish. Finally, learn how to make earrings, bracelets and other necklaces in metal clay and start making your second piece of jewelry. Remember that industry experts will be in the classroom ready to give you encouragement, advice and feedback on all the pieces you create.
