Learn the couture embellishment technique of tambour beading with world-renown experts, Hand and Lock, the company who Louis Vuitton and other fashion houses turn to for their beadwork and embroidery. Director Jessica will choose one student to complete a work placement in summer 2014.

Beadwork is set to be huge for spring/summer 2014, having featured heavily in the Alexander McQueen, Marc Jacobs, Prada and Robert Cavalli collections, as well as many more. But while traditional methods of adding beads can be hugely time-consuming, couture tambour beading enables you to efficiently add ornate embellishments to clothes, accessories, hats, home furnishings and much more. It’s an incredibly useful technique for any designer-maker working with textiles, as it speeds up creation of high price tag products.

As well as learning how to perfect this technique to a couture standard, you’ll also discover how to design original embellishments, learning how to overcome the limitations of beads and sequins and create a bespoke piece of work.

Get bespoke teaching from industry experts

Throughout the course you’ll be given personal feedback and expert advice from Hand and Lock staff: they will be in the classroom every Monday morning giving bespoke feedback. Plus, industry experts will be reviewing your portfolio too: look at the events page for notifications of the next portfolio review days.

Develop your career

As well as learning a couture technique that will enable you to create high-quality beadwork more efficiently, Jessica will personally select at least one of the most promising students from the course to take a work placement at Hand and Lock’s central London studio. Here, you’ll get an insight into the way the 246-year-old institution works with couture houses, private clients and commercial commissions.

Your own career coach

All enrolled students will have email access to their own dedicated career coach at Mastered for one month, on hand to help advise, signpost, nudge and whatever is needed to help you develop your creative career. This launch offer is available as part of the Founding 500 initiative.

Course breakdown

There is a mixture of video lessons, demonstrations and exercises, picture galleries to inspire and projects for you to complete. Here’s what the course looks like:

  1. Part one: tambour techniques

Master the art of tambour beading using tricks of the trade. In this module you’ll learn how to use the tambour beading tool most effectively, create a chain stitch and add beads. This technique is most effective for designer-makers once they can achieve a certain speed, and Jessica’s insider secrets will help you get to that standard.

  2. Part two: advanced tambour

Discover how to stitch different types of beads, and add sequins too. You’ll learn how to adapt the tambour technique to work with a variety of fabrics, including difficult materials such as velvet. In this module you will also be shown how to create decorative patterns and three-dimensional embellishments.

  3. Part three: tambour design

Now you have mastered the art of tambour beading, it’s time to learn how to create your own designs. Learn how to design within the constraints of beads and sequins, making the most of the materials you love, and discover the best way to build up a design, from the first bead to the last sequin. There’s practical information here about how to design embellishments to work on clothing, hats, accessories and more, and you’ll get a peek inside Hand and Lock’s impressive collection of couture tambour beading.
